ATS Resume Checker: How to Review Your Resume
By CVAdapt Team
An ATS resume checker can help you spot unclear formatting, missing details and gaps between your resume and a job description. Its score is a review aid. It cannot tell you how every employer will rank your application or guarantee an interview.
What does an applicant tracking system do?
An applicant tracking system helps an employer manage applications. Parsing is one part of that workflow: software extracts information from an uploaded resume into candidate fields. A parsing problem does not necessarily mean rejection. Greenhouse, for example, explains that a failed parse can leave the resume attached while the candidate details need manual entry. Greenhouse's parsing guidance.
What should I check before applying?
- Contact details: confirm your name, email and phone number are correct and visible as text.
- Relevant experience: compare the job's responsibilities with examples you can substantiate.
- Skills: use the employer's terminology where it accurately describes your experience. Do not add skills simply to improve a score.
- Reading order: inspect the exported document and try selecting its text. Review every page for cut-off lines, empty headings and awkward breaks.
- File requirements: follow the application portal's requested format and size limit.
Which formatting choices help?
A single column with clear headings is a useful starting point for online applications. Keep essential information out of decorative elements and images. Greenhouse identifies columns, complex tables and contact details inside headers, footers or text boxes as possible parsing problems. Other systems may behave differently. Read the documented formatting issues.
CVAdapt's Quick ATS resume studio uses simple headings, selectable text and a single column. You can upload a resume, enter your experience or choose a saved profile, then add a job description for tailoring. Review the AI proposal before applying it to your draft.
Frequently asked questions
Does a high ATS score guarantee an interview?
No. A checker evaluates its own criteria. It does not reproduce every employer's system, screening questions, eligibility requirements or hiring judgment. Use the feedback to review your application, not predict its outcome.
Should I hide keywords in white text?
No. Add relevant skills and evidence visibly in your resume. Hidden or repeated keywords do not make an unsupported qualification accurate and can undermine the credibility of your application.
Should I submit PDF or Word?
Use the format requested by the employer. When both are accepted, check the exported file and the details the application portal extracts. PDF preserves the document's layout; Word is useful when the employer requests an editable file.
What is free in CVAdapt?
You can try the public resume editor without signing in. Downloads from that template editor require a paid plan. The separate manual Quick Resume preview offers a PDF with a CVAdapt watermark. Pro adds AI creation and adaptation, clean PDF and editable Word downloads. See current plans.
Can I edit the document preview?
Yes. Switch to Edit document in the resume designer or Edit on page in Quick ATS. Choose a visible section or use the field selector for blank details. Changes update the form and the PDF layout; review the finished file before submitting.
